Tom And Margaret: Certified Brilliance

Anticipation was running high on Thursday 19th as members and guests settled in to watch the fiercely fought “International Speech Competition” and “The Evaluation Competition.”
Pat Sexton Runner Up, International Speech Competition and Evaluation Competition. Margaret O'Regan Winner, Evaluation Competition. Tom O'Connor winner, International Speech Competition.

The four International Speech competitors took wildly different approaches to their speech contents and deliveries. Claire O’Connell gave an eerie tale, beginning with her murder and then going backwards through her life. It was a grand cinematic approach, raising questions about what is important in life. Brendan Foley's speech had a modern flair, tackling the topic of the internet. His speech was well thought out and relevant. Pat Sexton had his boxing gloves on, both literally and verbally and was ready to compete. He gave the audience the old one, two. His speech about Ali G exhorted us to never give up.  Tom O’Connor took the audience on a trip through history. Nazis created a show concentration camp, where a small group Jews talented in the fields of music and singing, practised and performed under the watchful eye of their captors. Tom O’Connor achieved first place and Pat Sexton, second.

Fermoy Toast Master John Sherlock delivered the speech for the Evaluation Contest. This can be a challenging role, but John rose to it with aplomb. Brendan Foley, Tom O’Connor, Margaret O’Regan and Pat Sexton evaluated. Their advice was both thoughtful and insightful. Margaret O’Regan achieved first place and Pat Sexton, second.
Experienced Toast Master Tony O’Regan was superb in the role of Contest Chair. With Area Governor, Noel O’Connor taking on the role of Chief Judge, we were in safe hands. Mary Buckley as Topics Master kept the audience on their toes, with her range of Table Topics. Helsa Giles and Dave Roche were our Time Keepers and Bridie O’Connell and Geraldine Conway were effective Grammarian and Ah Counters. Liam Flynn, club President presented the awards with pleasure. Many thank to our wonderful Educational Vice President without whom, this night would not have been possible.
The Area Final will be hosted by Speakeasy at the Hibernian Hotel, Mallow on Wednesday  April 1st  800 p.m. You’d be an April’s Fool to miss the opportunity to see the experts in action!  For more information go to www.speakeasytoastmasters.com
