An Evening of Learning, Laughter and First-Time Roles

A Warm Welcome for Guests

Speak Easy Mallow Toastmasters opened its doors to guests recently for a special Open Night, offering newcomers a chance to experience the structure, spirit and supportive atmosphere of a Toastmasters meeting. The evening proved a clear success, with strong attendance, lively participation and plenty of positive engagement throughout.

Club President Paul Corcoran opened the meeting, welcoming both members and guests and outlining the purpose of the evening — to give visitors a genuine flavour of Toastmasters and how it helps people develop confidence, communication and leadership skills.

Leadership and Team Roles

The role of Toastmaster for the evening was taken by James McConville, who guided proceedings smoothly and kept the programme on track while ensuring guests felt included and at ease.

Several members stepped into key roles, with notable first-time performances. María O’Donnell served as Topicsmaster for the first time, while Peter Patton also took on the role of Grammarian for the first time. Both performed with confidence and enthusiasm.

Other roles were filled by Rachel Liston as Timekeeper, Claire O’Connell as General Evaluator, Margaret O’Regan as Ah Counter, and Poetry Corner, which featured a thoughtful reading of “Rescued Time” by Seamus O’Rourke by Noel O'Connor.

Prepared Speeches Showcase Variety

The prepared speeches provided an engaging and varied programme.

The first speech of the evening came from Juan Marina Camarasa, who delivered “How to Make Fajitas – My Style”, a Presentation Mastery speech that combined practical instruction with personal flair. The speech was evaluated by Michael Cronin.

Next, Paul Gallagher presented “Divine Intervention”, a Level 3 Pathway speech that demonstrated strong descriptive language and storytelling. Pat Sexton provided the evaluation.

The final speech of the evening was delivered by Bobby Buckley, who spoke on “Same Old Blues Again” as part of the Motivational Strategies Level 3 Pathway. His speech was assessed by Marie Lynes.

Guests Take Centre Stage

Following the speeches, members and guests enjoyed a break, giving everyone an opportunity to mingle, ask questions and learn more about Toastmasters in an informal setting.

The meeting then moved into the Table Topics session, led by María O’Donnell. Despite it being her first time in the role, she delivered a varied and imaginative set of topics and, notably, supported guests in finding their voices and participating — no small achievement on an open night.

A Strong Finish and Looking Ahead

Evaluations and closing remarks brought the meeting to a close, rounding off what many described as a highly successful and welcoming open night.

Speak Easy Mallow Toastmasters will meet again on February 5th at 8pm in the Hibernian hotel, Mallow, with a theme inspired by Brigid’s Day, exploring the Irish patron saint along with related myths and stories. New guests are always welcome to attend and experience the club for themselves.

Speak Easy Mallow Toastmasters Welcome the New Year with Renewal and Resolve

January Meeting Sets the Tone Ahead of Upcoming Open Night

A New Year, A Fresh Start

Speak Easy Mallow Toastmasters launched 2026 with energy and optimism at their meeting on 8th January, where the theme of renewal, regrowth and the resolve to try something different ran strongly throughout the evening.

The theme emerged immediately as the Toastmaster of the Evening P Sexton reflected on how a decision to “take up” something new led him to attend his first Toastmasters meeting several years ago — a reminder of how small choices can lead to lasting change.

Poetry and Purpose

The sense of renewal deepened when R Murphy delivered a moving recitation of Brendan Kennelly’s poem “Begin.” Her performance captured the poem’s message of resilience and fresh starts, resonating strongly with members as they looked ahead to the year to come.

Speeches that Encouraged Growth

The prepared speeches continued the evening’s theme with thoughtful and motivating contributions.

M O’Donnell followed with “Embracing a New Year,” encouraging her audience, in a quietly persuasive manner, to step beyond their comfort zones and welcome change.

Next, M O’Regan presented “Going Beyond,” highlighting the importance of stretching ourselves and embracing new challenges within Toastmasters as a way to grow both personally and professionally.

Laughter Takes Centre Stage

Humour took pride of place when M Cronin delivered “The Eyes Have It.” His observations on the infamous “parental laser” stare and the tension of exchanged glances across a crowded room kept the audience laughing throughout. Little else was learned, but no one seemed to mind.

Lively Topics Session

T O’Sullivan, acting as Topicsmaster, led an energetic and wide-ranging Table Topics session. Discussion points included the determination to follow through on New Year’s resolutions, the power of a magic wand, the toxic nature of social media commentary, hopes for Cork to win the All-Ireland Hurling Championship and Spain to claim the World Cup, ideal winter holiday destinations, and the welcome signs of spring.

The session even produced a light-hearted confession from a self-proclaimed Fair City addict — proof, perhaps, that a Thursday night at Speak Easy Mallow offers a very healthy alternative to guilty pleasures.

Looking Ahead: Open Night on January 22nd

The club now looks forward to its Open Night on 22nd January, taking place at the Hibernian Hotel, Mallow, at 7.45pm. The open night offers guests a free opportunity to experience Toastmasters first-hand, see the structure of a meeting, and get a flavour of how the organisation helps people build confidence, communication and leadership skills.

Anyone interested in trying something new in 2026 will receive a warm welcome at Speak Easy Mallow Toastmasters.
